Shintaro Ohata is an artist born in Hiroshima, Japan in
1975. He beautifully combines sculpture and painting into his works. The scenes
of each work are meant to show “everyday life like scenes of a movie.” He utilizes
dramatic light and color like that of a movie. Each scene has a sculpture that
is placed in front of the painting, combining the 2D and the 3D. Each sculpture
is painted to match the background and appears to have a light source (that isn’t
actually there in the physical environment) because of how dramatically he
paints them. His work has been displayed internationally.
I love the
unity in each of his pieces. I love how the sculptures actually look like
paintings themselves because of his use of texture and how he chose to stroke
each color. The painterly texture makes the sculpture seem like it just jumped
out of the painting. I would love to see these in person. The idea is original
as well.
